When was Longchamp founded?

Longchamp’s story began in 1948 when Jean Cassegrain, the father of today's President, began to craft luxury leather smoking pipes. After several successful years offering the finest smoke products in France, the company began to create small leather goods and eventually expanded the collection to include women’s handbags, luggage, ready-to-wear, shoes and men’s leather collections. What began as a small smoke shop, known for its expertise and excellent craftsmanship, soon expanded to a major luxury brand.

What does the horse logo stand for?

The emblematic horse logo is a symbol of the company’s inception. There is a famous horse race track in Paris called Longchamp or "long field." Just next door was an old mill that Monsieur Cassegrain - which means "miller" in French - used to pass in front of every day. The company soon found its name: it being only a short trot from the miller and onto the race track, the way was fore trod!

Since it was founded, Longchamp has opened six production sites in the West of France (in Mayenne, Vendée, Maine-et-Loire and Orne).

Talented men and women have sustained the leather craftsmanship of this family business for over 70 years.

These sites employ over 800 people with rare expertise, spread across 25 workshops.

In addition to this factory network are two production sites abroad, in Tunisia and Mauritius. Finally, the brand also makes use of partner workshops in France, China, Romania and Morocco.

Regardless of the geographic location of the workshops, "made by Longchamp" ensures the consistent manufacturing of products that all meet the same quality standards.

Moreover, Longchamp is transparent about where its designs are assembled, displaying the information on the labels inside its bags.
Longchamp's leather comes from animals farmed in Europe, Africa, and South America. Longchamp ensures that these farms do not contribute to deforestation, particularly in the Amazon rainforest. These hides are handled by the best tanners in France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands, England, Uruguay, and Brazil.
Longchamp no longer uses exotic species or animals farmed for their fur in the manufacture of its collections. Their protection, as well as the conservation of biodiversity and endangered species, is a priority for Sophie Delafontaine, Artistic Director, who has now banned their use in the Longchamp collections. The leathers used to manufacture Longchamp products come exclusively from animals, ovine and bovine, primarily intended for consumption.
Designed in 1993 by Philippe Cassegrain, the Pliage is an essential Longchamp accessory. Inspired by the Japanese art of paper-folding origami, it has become an iconic bag over the years. Today, with the arrival of My Pliage, Longchamp is pushing the limits of customization. What does this mean exactly? With My Pliage Signature, Longchamp lets you design striking and eco-friendly custom bags. Pick the letters and numbers you want to appear on the body of your bag and get the graphic color block look with the help of sublimation printing. In addition to this eco-friendly printing method, the fabric is made of 100% recycled polyester, combining style and respect for the environment. My Pliage Club in the spotlight! Drawing inspiration from origami, Longchamp created Le Pliage, a lightweight foldable bag that has achieved cult status across the world.
